bits and pieces 2 math answers: Math Made a Bit Easier Larry Zafran, 2009-11-02 An independent book written and self-published by former math teacher and private math tutor Larry Zafran. Students are justified in proclaiming that math is hard, but there is a specific reason why they feel this way. The author maintains that the struggle can be lessened by following the roadmap presented, but it will take time and effort on the part of the student. Since math is often not properly taught, it is often not properly learned. Anything that hasn't truly been learned, regardless of subject, is hard. Once the various concepts are more secure, and the student's gaps in understanding have been addressed, math will have been made a bit easier as promised by the book's title. However, the book does not imply that learning math is fast, fun, or easy. Most of the book's content is comprised of the roadmap of topics for a student to work through at his/her own pace. Like all paths, it begins at the beginning, in this case starting with a review of basic arithmetic, followed by basic operations, negative numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and basic probability and statistics. This is the foundation of all math. The space devoted to each topic is proportional to how difficult most students find the topic, as well as how important the topic is in preparation for later math studies. The material is explained conversationally and in plain English as promised by the book's subtitle, without talking down to the reader, and without the use of contrived examples or cartoonish illustrations. The book concludes with a chapter on how to effectively study math and improve scores on exams. Like the rest of the book, the chapter takes a unique standpoint on the matter, and offers suggestions which include how to get oneself into the proper mental and emotional mindset for being successful with math. |

bits and pieces 2 math answers: Mathemagics: A Magical Journey Through Advanced Mathematics - Connecting More Than 60 Magic Tricks To High-level Math Ricardo V Teixeira, Jang-woo Park, 2020-05-29 'This delightful book connects mathematical concepts in a dozen areas to magic tricks. Expositions of the mathematics precede description and analysis of the tricks. The expositions are too short for in-depth learning; the intent is to give sophomores a taste of the content and ideas of later mathematics courses. Each chapter features exercises on the mathematics, and students can have fun practicing the tricks.'Mathematics MagazineTeixeira and Park present over 60 different magic tricks while introducing students to high-level math areas. Readers will learn really interesting ideas that will better prepare them for future courses and help them finding areas they might want to study deeper. And as a 'side effect' students will learn amazing magic tricks, century-old secrets, and details from famous magicians and mathematicians. The material was written to quickly present key concepts in several mathematical areas in direct way. Little or no proficiency in math is assumed. In fact, students do not require any Calculus knowledge. And since chapters are almost independent from each other, this book also work as introduction to several other courses.Topics covered include mathematical proofs, probability, abstract algebra, linear algebra, mathematical computing, number theory, coding theory, geometry, topology, real analysis, numerical analysis and history of math. |
bits and pieces 2 math answers: Elementary School Mathematics John A. Van de Walle, 1994 Elementary School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally, Second Edition, provides detailed, comprehensive coverage of the teaching of mathematics in grades K-8. Firmly grounded in the NCTM Standards, the text develops a constructivist/developmental approach to learning mathematics that focuses on the nature of mathematical concepts and the manner in which children construct mathematical ideas. It aims to help teachers reconceptualize mathematics as a problem-solving endeavor not as a mastery of rules and procedures. An accessible synthesis of viewpoints and current research, this highly praised text includes topics ranging from the development of basic fact mastery to the important development of number sense--All the while encouraging teachers to consider the construction of mathematics from the child's perspective. In-depth treatment of curriculum content teaching, combined with hundreds of teaching activities aimed at conceptual development, makes Elementary School Mathematics a practical teacher's resource as well as a college text. Elementary School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally, Second Edition, features: greater emphasis on the NCTM Curriculum Standards and the Professional Teaching Standards as the leading forces in mathematics education; a new chapter on mathematics as a science of pattern and order; a completely rewritten chapter on alternative assessment; expanded and improved problem-solving examples; enhanced coverage of grades 7 and 8; even more black-line masters with directions for making other useful materials; and an Instructor's Manual with instructional suggestions, activities for group homework, practicum ideas, and essay questions. |
bits and pieces 2 math answers: English Language Learners and Math Holly Hansen-Thomas, 2009-08-01 Taking a community of practice perspective that highlights the learner as part of a community, rather than a lone individual responsible for her/his learning, this ethnographically-influenced study investigates how Latina/o English Language Learners (ELLs) in middle school mathematics classes negotiated their learning of mathematics and mathematical discourse. The classes in which the Latina/o students were enrolled used a reform-oriented approach to math learning; the math in these classes was—to varying degrees—taught using a hands-on, discovery approach to learning where group learning was valued, and discussions in and about math were critical. This book presents the stories of how six immigrant and American-born ELLs worked with their three teachers of varied ethnicity, education, experience with second language learners, and training in reform-oriented mathematics curricula to gain a degree of competence in the mathematical discourse they used in class. Identity, participation, situated learning, discourse use by learners of English as a Second Language (ESL), framing in language, and student success in mathematics are all critical notions that are highlighted within this school-based research. |
bits and pieces 2 math answers: The War with Grandpa Lit Link Gr. 4-6 Keith Whittington, Peter was thrilled to hear that Grandpa Jack was coming to live with the family until he learned that Grandpa Jack was going to take over his bedroom and he has to move into the dark, scary guest room on the third floor. Grandpa Jack sees this rival activity as a joke and continues to get even with Peter. Instead of becoming close, Peter and Grandpa have a cruel and rather hurtful relationship developing. Peter learns about the causes and effects of war and how often self sacrifices and discussion are important if harmony and love are to exist in a family. Novel by R.K. Smith. bits and pieces 2 math answers: Street-Fighting Mathematics Sanjoy Mahajan, 2010-03-05 An antidote to mathematical rigor mortis, teaching how to guess answers without needing a proof or an exact calculation. In problem solving, as in street fighting, rules are for fools: do whatever works—don't just stand there! Yet we often fear an unjustified leap even though it may land us on a correct result. Traditional mathematics teaching is largely about solving exactly stated problems exactly, yet life often hands us partly defined problems needing only moderately accurate solutions. This engaging book is an antidote to the rigor mortis brought on by too much mathematical rigor, teaching us how to guess answers without needing a proof or an exact calculation. In Street-Fighting Mathematics, Sanjoy Mahajan builds, sharpens, and demonstrates tools for educated guessing and down-and-dirty, opportunistic problem solving across diverse fields of knowledge—from mathematics to management. Mahajan describes six tools: dimensional analysis, easy cases, lumping, picture proofs, successive approximation, and reasoning by analogy. Illustrating each tool with numerous examples, he carefully separates the tool—the general principle—from the particular application so that the reader can most easily grasp the tool itself to use on problems of particular interest. Street-Fighting Mathematics grew out of a short course taught by the author at MIT for students ranging from first-year undergraduates to graduate students ready for careers in physics, mathematics, management, electrical engineering, computer science, and biology. They benefited from an approach that avoided rigor and taught them how to use mathematics to solve real problems. Street-Fighting Mathematics will appear in print and online under a Creative Commons Noncommercial Share Alike license. |

bits and pieces 2 math answers: On the Efficient Determination of Most Near Neighbors Mark S. Manasse, 2022-05-31 The time-worn aphorism close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades is clearly inadequate. Close also counts in golf, shuffleboard, archery, darts, curling, and other games of accuracy in which hitting the precise center of the target isn't to be expected every time, or in which we can expect to be driven from the target by skilled opponents. This book is not devoted to sports discussions, but to efficient algorithms for determining pairs of closely related web pages—and a few other situations in which we have found that inexact matching is good enough — where proximity suffices. We will not, however, attempt to be comprehensive in the investigation of probabilistic algorithms, approximation algorithms, or even techniques for organizing the discovery of nearest neighbors. We are more concerned with finding nearby neighbors; if they are not particularly close by, we are not particularly interested. In thinking of when approximation is sufficient, remember the oft-told joke about two campers sitting around after dinner. They hear noises coming towards them. One of them reaches for a pair of running shoes, and starts to don them. The second then notes that even with running shoes, they cannot hope to outrun a bear, to which the first notes that most likely the bear will be satiated after catching the slower of them. We seek problems in which we don't need to be faster than the bear, just faster than the others fleeing the bear. |
bits and pieces 2 math answers: Burn Math Class Jason Wilkes, 2016-03-22 A manifesto for a mathematical revolution Forget everything you've been taught about math. In Burn Math Class, Jason Wilkes takes the traditional approach to how we learn math -- with its unwelcoming textbooks, unexplained rules, and authoritarian assertions-and sets it on fire. Focusing on how mathematics is created rather than on mathematical facts, Wilkes teaches the subject in a way that requires no memorization and no prior knowledge beyond addition and multiplication. From these simple foundations, Burn Math Class shows how mathematics can be (re)invented from scratch without preexisting textbooks and courses. We can discover math on our own through experimentation and failure, without appealing to any outside authority. When math is created free from arcane notations and pretentious jargon that hide the simplicity of mathematical concepts, it can be understood organically -- and it becomes fun! Following this unconventional approach, Burn Math Class leads the reader from the basics of elementary arithmetic to various advanced topics, such as time-dilation in special relativity, Taylor series, and calculus in infinite-dimensional spaces. Along the way, Wilkes argues that orthodox mathematics education has been teaching the subject backward: calculus belongs before many of its so-called prerequisites, and those prerequisites cannot be fully understood without calculus. Like the smartest, craziest teacher you've ever had, Wilkes guides you on an adventure in mathematical creation that will radically change the way you think about math. Revealing the beauty and simplicity of this timeless subject, Burn Math Class turns everything that seems difficult about mathematics upside down and sideways until you understand just how easy math can be. |
bits and pieces 2 math answers: Epistemic Dilemmas Kevin McCain, Scott Stapleford, Matthias Steup, 2021-10-21 This book features original essays by leading epistemologists that address questions related to epistemic dilemmas from a variety of new, sometimes unexpected, angles. It seems plausible that there can be no win moral situations in which no matter what one does one fails some moral obligation. Is there an epistemic analog to moral dilemmas? Are there epistemically dilemmic situations—situations in which we are doomed to violate an epistemic requirement? If there are, when exactly do they arise and what can we learn from them? The contributors to this volume cover a wide variety of positions on epistemic dilemmas. The coverage ranges from discussions of the nature of epistemic dilemmas to arguments that there are no such things to suggestions for how to resolve (or at least live with) epistemic dilemmas to proposals for how thinking about epistemic dilemmas can be used to inform theorizing in other areas of epistemology. Epistemic Dilemmas will be of interest to scholars and advanced students in epistemology working on the nature of justification and evidential support, higher-order requirements, or suspension of judgment. |
