These SNCO's and NCO's were hand-picked out of hundreds of applicants to come to the School of Infantry to be Combat Instructors. I highly encourage you to prepare your mind and body for this training, the knowledge you gain here will carry you throughout your Marine Corps career. During the training cycle, I expect you to commit yourself to your training and education by learning as much as you can from our Combat Instructors. Finally, when you graduate, I expect you to retain what you learned and uphold the time honored traditions of our Marine Corps. Remember that regardless of military Occupation Specialty, every Marine is a Riflemen first. Every Marine, regardless of his military occupation, is trained as a Rifleman. This concept has been around since the Marine Corps inception in 1775, when every man who volunteered was required to bring his own musket. In the early 1900s, as the Marine Corps grew and additional military occupations were created, the Commandant, General John A. Lejeune, ensured that every Marine, regardless of his Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), received marksmanship training. During the Korean War, the Marine Corps was the only service to create rifle companies entirely from cooks, drivers, and other non-infantry Marines. From this war, the proverbial saying, Every Marine a Rifleman was born. In the nineteen eighties, the Commandant, General Al Gray, recognized the need to train all Marines in more than just basic marksmanship, but in modern-day combat skills. The School of Infantry was assigned to conduct this training known as Common Skills because it is common to every Marine. These common skills allow every Marine, regardless of MOS, to act as Rifleman when called upon. MCT Battalion generates Marine Riflemen to possess a foundational understanding of, and their role in applying, the Marine Corps' warfighting ethos, core values, basic tenets of maneuver warfare, leadership responsibilities, mental, moral, and physical resiliency in order to contribute to the successful accomplishment of their unit's mission. New Rifleman Definition: A Marine Rifleman embodies the Marine Corps' warfighting ethos: offensively minded; lethal with their weapon mentally, morally, physically resilient; proficient in basic field craft; and possessing a foundational understanding of leadership and the basic tenets of maneuver warfare. Convoy commanders must then become tacticians. How to study war? The student of tactics studies previous fights and mentally places himself in the position of the participants. Knowing what they knew, how would he have reacted? In hind sight, what was the best course of action, remembering that there is no one perfect solution? Any number of actions would have succeeded. The tactician must learn what would have worked best for him. For this reason, I have pulled together all the examples of convoy ambushes. The 20th century, Vietnam War, and current war in Iraq provide a wealth of examples of convoy ambushes from which to study. Unfortunately, the US Army did not record many good accounts of ambushes during the Vietnam War. Much of what is presented in this text is based upon oral interviews of the participants, sometimes backed by official record, citations or reports. For this reason, some of the ambush case studies present only the perspective of a crew member of a gun truck or the convoy commander. Since this academic study works best when one mentally takes the place of one of the participants, this view of the ambush serves a useful purpose. After my own review of the ambushes, I have drawn my own conclusion as to what principles apply to convoy ambushes.

DEFINITION AND MISSION OF THE COMBAT HUNTER. A combat hunter selects, uses, and maximizes the appropriate optics available to see objects and events, both hidden and distant. A combat hunter, through attention to detail, establishes a baseline of an environment and detects the anomalies located within that environment. A combat hunter tracks humans and vehicles by reading the natural terrain. He pursues an armed enemy and gathers data that may suggest the enemy’s action and intent. The combat hunter is the creation of a mindset through the integration of enhanced observation, combat profiling, and combat tracking. This mindset will enable Marines to locate, close with, and destroy an elusive enemy that hides among the population and uses asymmetric tactics to attack our forces. By utilizing enhanced observation, combat profiling, and combat tracking, a Marine is more lethal, survivable, and tactically cunning. He becomes a force multiplier to his unit’s operations. OBSERVATION. Observation begins with the gathering and processing of information obtained through the senses. The five sensory systems are sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste that allow information to be collected from the environment. Perception is the process that the mind uses to organize the sensory information into an understandable interpretation of the environment. Central to all these skills is a critically-thinking Marine whose decisions can be affected by numerous factors, both external and internal. The Marine refines his decision making capabilities by understanding the decision cycle process and his awareness of the physical and biological responses he goes through when faced with a dynamic situation. Refining these skills and understanding the effects they have on his mind and body make him more capable and more lethal.
