Emerging technologies have the potential to bridge this gap by creating the kind of team-based learning environments and clinical approaches that are increasingly necessary in the modern health care system both in the United States and around the world. To explore these technologies and their potential for improving education and practice, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a workshop in November 2017. Participants explored effective use of technologies as tools for bridging identified gaps within and between health professions education and practice in order to optimize learning, performance and access in high-, middle-, and low-income areas while ensuring the well-being of the formal and informal health workforce. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop. |

shadow health community assessment: Care of the Mentally Disordered Offender in the Community Alec Buchanan, Lisa Wootton, 2017-10-05 This revised and updated edition of Care of the Mentally Disordered Offender in the Community provides a comprehensive, evidence-based guide to theory and practice. The social and clinical context within which mental health care is provided to offenders in community settings has changed significantly in recent years. An increasing proportion of all mental health care is provided in the community and our knowledge of the links between violence and mental illness has advanced. Existing psychological and pharmacological treatments have been refined and new treatments have been introduced. Epidemiological and intervention-based research has evaluated these changes and suggested new avenues for clinical development. Over three sections, the second edition of Care of the Mentally Disordered Offender in the Community explores the key areas of the field. Part 1 describes the social, administrative and clinical context within which care is now given. Part 2 discusses treatment and the evaluation of violence risk when determining the most appropriate treatment. Part 3 explores psychiatric services and their relationship with other agencies. The text has been updated to cover recent developments in theory and practice. New chapters have been added that cover US provision for people with mental disorders leaving prison, the community management of sexual offenders, the relationship between care and coercion and the treatment of personality disorders. Written by a global team of experts, the book provides critical insights into the social, clinical, and institutional aspects of an increasingly important part of psychiatric community care. |

shadow health community assessment: Community Livability Fritz Wagner, Roger W. Caves, 2012-06-25 What is a livable community? How do you design and develop one? What does government at all levels need to do to support and nuture the cause of livable communities? Using a blend of theory and practice, experts in the field look at evidence from international, state and local perspectives to explore what is meant by the term livable communities. Chapters examine the various influencing factors such as the effect and importance of transportation options/alternatives to the elderly, the significance of walkability as a factor in developing a livable and healthy community, the importance of good open space providing for human activity and health, restorative benefits, the importance of coordinated land use and transportation planning, and the relationship between livability and quality of life. While much of the discussion of this topic is usually theoretical and abstract, Wagner and Caves use case studies from North America, Brazil and the United Kingdom to provide substantive examples of initiatives implemented across the world. This book fills an important gap in the literature on livable communities and at the same time assists policy officials, professionals and academics in their quest to develop livable communities. |

shadow health community assessment: Health Economics from Theory to Practice Simon Eckermann, 2017-03-20 This book provides a robust set of health economic principles and methods to inform societal decisions in relation to research, reimbursement and regulation (pricing and monitoring of performance in practice). We provide a theoretical and practical framework that navigates to avoid common biases and suboptimal outcomes observed in recent and current practice of health economic analysis, as opposed to claiming to be comprehensive in covering all methods. Our aim is to facilitate efficient health system decision making processes in research, reimbursement and regulation, which promote constrained optimisation of community outcomes from a societal perspective given resource constraints, available technology and processes of technology assessment. Importantly, this includes identifying an efficient process to maximize the potential that arises from research and pricing in relation to existing technology under uncertainty, given current evidence and associated opportunity costs of investment. Principles and methods are identified and illustrated across health promotion, prevention and palliative care settings as well as treatment settings. Health policy implications are also highlighted. |

In response, food justice activists based in low-income communities of color have developed community-based solutions, arguing that activities like urban agriculture, nutrition education, and food-related social enterprises can drive systemic social change. Focusing on the work of several food justice groups—including Community Services Unlimited, a South Los Angeles organization founded as the nonprofit arm of the Southern California Black Panther Party—More Than Just Food explores the possibilities and limitations of the community-based approach, offering a networked examination of the food justice movement in the age of the nonprofit industrial complex. |
shadow health community assessment: Matching Resources to Needs in Community Care Bleddyn Davies, David Challis, 2018-08-09 First published in 1986, Matching Resources to Needs describes the PSSRU’s community care approach and analyses the first of the community care projects, a seminal set of experiments in the care of the elderly at high risk of institutional long-term care. The experiments create field structures which provide incentives to improve efficiency, decentralised power over resources being balanced by enhanced accountability. The first part explains the approach, analyses the causes of inefficiency in ~British social care, and reviews British and American evidence about the relationships between resources, recipient characteristics and outcomes. The approach is compared with some two dozen American experiments hitherto unknown in the UK. It describes the design of the project and its evaluation. The authors then examine the experimental results. They show that cost and welfare effects are better and the costs of outcomes are lower for recipients of community car. The third part of the book uses observational and other data to explore the relationships between structures, assumptive worlds, causal processes and outcomes and their costs. It also analyses the performance of the core tasks of entrepreneurial case management for types of case. The book concludes with a discussion of the broader implications of this approach to community care. |

shadow health community assessment: Psychologically Informed Physiotherapy E-Book Stuart Porter, 2016-11-18 Psychologically Informed Physiotherapy is a key new textbook for those who need a trusted and comprehensive resource to guide them in applying psychosocial perspectives to their physiotherapy practice. The first of its kind, this textbook brings together an international and interdisciplinary team of leading experts in the field. Together they present an evidence-based range of ideas and concepts around the psychologically informed practice framework, bringing psychosocial aspects of physiotherapy to the fore alongside the established biomedical model. By applying these aspects to screening, exploration and triaging, physiotherapists are better able to identify the origins of pain and barriers to rehabilitation; and so are more likely to achieve consistently good clinical outcomes for their patients. Throughout, clinical case studies ensure that the theory is then grounded in a variety of practical scenarios after which some reflective exercises and clinically relevant scenarios reinforce learning and understanding. Chapters on: - Psychology of professional identity in health care - The biopsychosocial model - Screening for red flags - Adapting interactions with others to form empowering relationships and influence behavioural change - Neuro-immune-endocrine interactions and clinical practice in stress, pain and recovery - Care of the anxious patient through cognitive and person-centred strategies - Alternative and evolving models of practice, including the clinical flag system - The psychology of the athlete from the physiotherapist's perspective - Using counselling and psychological strategies within physiotherapy - Making evidence-based decisions and measuring effectiveness in practice - Using psychological interventions as a student or new graduate - First textbook of its kind for physiotherapists - Ideal confidence booster for both students and practitioners new to the subject - Illustrates the role social factors have on thoughts, emotions and behaviour in patients as well as the neurobiological manifestations of social stressors - Presents key, evidence-based concepts from leading international academics, clinicians and researchers in the field and across a range of health professions, including counselling and psychology |

shadow health community assessment: Local Food Systems in Old Industrial Regions Jay D. Gatrell, Paula S. Ross, 2016-05-06 In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in local food systems-among policy makers, planners, and public health professionals, as well as environmentalists, community developers, academics, farmers, and ordinary citizens. While most local food systems share common characteristics, the chapters in this book explore the unique challenges and opportunities of local food systems located within mature and/or declining industrial regions. Local food systems have the potential to provide residents with a supply of safe and nutritious food; such systems also have the potential to create much-needed employment opportunities. However, challenges are numerous and include developing local markets of a sufficient scale, adequately matching supply and demand, and meeting the environmental challenges of finding safe growing locations. Interrogating the scale, scope, and economic context of local food systems in aging industrialized cities, this book provides a foundation for the development of new sub-fields in economic, urban, and agricultural geographies that focus on local food systems. The book represents a first attempt to provide a systematic picture of the opportunities and challenges facing the development of local food systems in old industrial regions. |
