phantom by greer rivers book: Carry On Lisa Fenn, 2016-08-16 “An incredible life-affirming story” about an unexpected, lifechanging relationship between an ESPN producer and two disabled, inner-city athletes (Family Circle). When award-winning ESPN producer Lisa Fenn returned to her hometown for a story about two wrestlers at one of Cleveland’s toughest public high schools, she had no idea that the trip would change her life. Both young men were disadvantaged students with significant physical disabilities. Dartanyon Crockett was legally blind as a result of Leber’s disease; Leroy Sutton lost both his legs at eleven, when he was run over by a train. Brought together by wrestling, they had developed a brother-like bond as they worked to overcome their disabilities. After forming a profound connection with Dartanyon and Leroy, Fenn realized she couldn't just walk away when filming ended; these boys had had to overcome the odds too many times. Instead, Fenn dedicated herself to ensuring their success long after the reporting was finished and the story aired—and an unlikely family of three was formed. The years ahead would be fraught with complex challenges, but Fenn stayed with the boys every step of the way—teaching them essential life skills, helping them heal old wounds and traumatic pasts, and providing the first steady and consistent support system they’d ever had. This powerful memoir is one of love, hope, faith, and strength—a story about an unusual family and the courage to carry on, even in the most extraordinary circumstances. “A poignant memoir.” —Sports Illustrated “A profoundly moving memoir about two boys who become men in the face of life’s toughest challenges:. We see the many ways in which one person can carry another, and we are inspired to do the same.” —Tim Howard, New York Times–bestselling author of The Keeper “‘An astonishingly beautiful tale . . . like The Blind Side or Same Kind of Different As Me, Lisa Fenn’s work forces us to reframe our definition of family.” —Kevin Salwen, author of The Power of Half “A heartfelt memoir that grips you from the first page and pulls at your soul until the end” —Steve Eubanks, New York Times–bestselling author of All American |

phantom by greer rivers book: The Phantom of the Opera Gaston Leroux, Caitlin G. Freeman, 2014-01-25 On September 23, 1909, the Parisian daily newspaper, Le Gaulois, published its first installment of Gaston Leroux's Le Fantôme de l'Opéra (The Phantom of the Opera). This type of serialized publication, in France called a “feuilleton,” was common from the middle of the 19th century through the beginning of the 20th century. Many authors of the day published their novels section by section in newspapers to gain readership and to work out ideas before the publication of the first edition. Between the newspaper printing and the first edition, it was common for chapters to be added, rewritten, or removed as part of the editing process. In the feuilleton of Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, Gaston Leroux wrote a chapter called “L'enveloppe magique” (“The Magic Envelope”). Leroux decided to omit this chapter from his first edition, and so it only appeared in Le Gaulois. Since the feuilleton has never been translated, few people apart from the most dedicated Phantom enthusiasts are familiar with this lost chapter. For the first time, the text of “The Magic Envelope” has been translated into English so that fans of The Phantom of the Opera can read this forgotten gem. This chapter provides explanations for several enigmas that have puzzled readers since Leroux's first edition, and it offers a fascinating glimpse into the writing process of one of France's literary icons. |

phantom by greer rivers book: How to Read Literature Like a Professor 3E Thomas C. Foster, 2024-11-05 Thoroughly revised and expanded for a new generation of readers, this classic guide to enjoying literature to its fullest—a lively, enlightening, and entertaining introduction to a diverse range of writing and literary devices that enrich these works, including symbols, themes, and contexts—teaches you how to make your everyday reading experience richer and more rewarding. While books can be enjoyed for their basic stories, there are often deeper literary meanings beneath the surface. How to Read Literature Like a Professor helps us to discover those hidden truths by looking at literature with the practiced analytical eye—and the literary codes—of a college professor. What does it mean when a protagonist is traveling along a dusty road? When he hands a drink to his companion? When he’s drenched in a sudden rain shower? Thomas C. Foster provides answers to these questions as he explores every aspect of fiction, from major themes to literary models, narrative devices, and form. Offering a broad overview of literature—a world where a road leads to a quest, a shared meal may signify a communion, and rain, whether cleansing or destructive, is never just a shower—he shows us how to make our reading experience more intellectually satisfying and fun. The world, and curricula, have changed. This third edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect those changes, and features new chapters, a new preface and epilogue, as well as fresh teaching points Foster has developed over the past decade. Foster updates the books he discusses to include more diverse, inclusive, and modern works, such as Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give; Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven; Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere; Elizabeth Acevedo’s The Poet X; Helen Oyeyemi's Mr. Fox and Boy, Snow, Bird; Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street; Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God; Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet; Madeline Miller’s Circe; Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls; and Tahereh Mafi’s A Very Large Expanse of Sea. |

phantom by greer rivers book: The Bad Guy Celia Aaron, 2017-05-20 My name is Sebastian Lindstrom, and I'm the villain of this story. I've decided to lay myself bare. To tell the truth for once in my hollow life, no matter how dark it gets. And I can assure you, it will get so dark that you'll find yourself feeling around the blackened corners of my mind, seeking a door handle that isn't there. Don't mistake this for a confession. I neither seek forgiveness nor would I accept it. My sins are my own. They keep me company. Instead, this is the true tale of how I found her, how I stole her, and how I lost her. She was a damsel, one who already had her white knight. But every fairy tale has a villain, someone waiting in the wings to rip it all down. A scoundrel who will set the world on fire if that means he gets what he wants. That's me. I'm the bad guy. |

phantom by greer rivers book: Natural Born Killers Lucy Smoke, 2023-05-19 Rule No. 3: Never let anyone think they can hurt you and get away with it. I thought I'd seen and felt the worst of it, but there's nothing worse than betrayal. Corina knows who's behind what happened to me and she may think hiding will keep her safe, but after everything that's happened, nothing can keep her safe from me and the Sick Boys. She's a pawn in all of this, but I'll get that information even if it means I have to cut it out of her - piece by fucking piece. This little charade is about to end. They thought they could drag me down into the dirt and grind my soul into the dust. What they failed to realize is that there's nothing left of my soul and I don't mind getting a little dirty if it means getting my revenge. I may have let her fool me once, but there's no way in hell I'll let her fool me twice. After I'm done with her, I'm going after the big boys. |
