peabody assessment occupational therapy: Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Health and Medicine Division, Board on Health Care Services, Committee on Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities, 2019-08-31 The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. To receive SSDI or SSI disability benefits, an individual must meet the statutory definition of disability, which is the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity [SGA] by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months. SSA uses a five-step sequential process to determine whether an adult applicant meets this definition. Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities examines ways to collect information about an individual's physical and mental (cognitive and noncognitive) functional abilities relevant to work requirements. This report discusses the types of information that support findings of limitations in functional abilities relevant to work requirements, and provides findings and conclusions regarding the collection of information and assessment of functional abilities relevant to work requirements. |
peabody assessment occupational therapy: Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process Aota, 2014 As occupational therapy celebrates its centennial in 2017, attention returns to the profession's founding belief in the value of therapeutic occupations as a way to remediate illness and maintain health. The founders emphasized the importance of establishing a therapeutic relationship with each client and designing an intervention plan based on the knowledge about a client's context and environment, values, goals, and needs. Using today's lexicon, the profession's founders proposed a vision for the profession that was occupation based, client centered, and evidence based--the vision articulated in the third edition of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process. The Framework is a must-have official document from the American Occupational Therapy Association. Intended for occupational therapy practitioners and students, other health care professionals, educators, researchers, payers, and consumers, the Framework summarizes the interrelated constructs that describe occupational therapy practice. In addition to the creation of a new preface to set the tone for the work, this new edition includes the following highlights: a redefinition of the overarching statement describing occupational therapy's domain; a new definition of clients that includes persons, groups, and populations; further delineation of the profession's relationship to organizations; inclusion of activity demands as part of the process; and even more up-to-date analysis and guidance for today's occupational therapy practitioners. Achieving health, well-being, and participation in life through engagement in occupation is the overarching statement that describes the domain and process of occupational therapy in the fullest sense. The Framework can provide the structure and guidance that practitioners can use to meet this important goal. |

peabody assessment occupational therapy: Principles of Assessment and Outcome Measurement for Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists Alison Laver Fawcett, 2013-03-15 This textbook on assessment and outcome measurement is written for both occupational therapy and physiotherapy students and qualified therapists. It begins by defining what is meant by assessment, outcome, evaluation and measurement and discussing the complexity of therapy assessment and measurement, including the challenge of measuring human behaviour and the impact of factors such as task demand and context, including the environment. Methods of data collection (e.g. observation, interview, standardised testing) and sources (e.g. self-report, proxy) for collecting information about clients are then reviewed, and the main purposes of assessment (e.g. descriptive, evaluative, predictive, discriminative) presented. The book then addresses the topics of standardisation, levels of measurement, reliability, validity and clinical utility. There is a chapter describing and applying models for categorizing levels of function to aid assessment and measurement. The concept of clinical reasoning and reflective practice is then explored. Application of principles is supported through detailed case studies and worksheets and the criteria for test critique and guidelines for choosing a particular assessment approach are discussed. |

peabody assessment occupational therapy: Occupational Therapy with Children Sylvia Rodger, Jenny Ziviani, 2006-06-05 Occupational Therapy with Children draws on contemporary research to examine children’s roles, their occupations and the skills which underpin their ability to participate in society. The book will develop the occupational therapist’s understanding of how to optimise the participation of children in the various environments in which they are required or choose to engage. Occupational Therapy with Children maintains a developmental perspective and incorporates child-centred interventions to improve performance deficits. Section one examines children’s roles and occupations in contemporary society at a broad level. Coverage includes the child’s participation in the family, at school and in the community. This section considers environmental influences on childhood activities, and highlights children’s changing occupational time use and the impact this has on health and wellbeing. Section two focuses on childhood as a period of significant development and skill acquisition. This is profiled as a dynamic period for the therapist to encourage occupational mastery across the spectrum of childhood experience: in play; in self-care; as a student; and beyond the school grounds. Topical chapters evaluate participation in physical activity and consider the potential for ‘healthy’ leisure, along with the risk characteristics associated with certain approaches to leisure. Occupational Therapy with Children is aimed at students and practitioners of occupational therapy. Other childhood professionals, particularly early childhood educators, will also appreciate the articulate approach this book takes towards the development of the child. Highly illustrated with contemporary photographs, drawings and succinct tables Includes case studies; providing worked examples of therapeutic applications Draws on the World Health Organisation International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to frame the concept of children’s occupations and societal participation Responsive to developments in occupational science Expert contributors provide international perspectives From the Foreword by Professor Charles Christiansen, The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston [Occupational therapists] will find that this book provides a framework that makes planning effective therapy with children practical, relevant, and effective . . . peabody assessment occupational therapy: Occupational Therapy Across Cultural Boundaries Susan Cook Merrill, 2012-10-12 This fascinating book examines the concept of culture from a unique perspective--that of individual occupational therapists who have worked in environments very different from those in which they were educated or had worked previously. In Occupational Therapy Across Cultural Boundaries, six occupational therapists relate their experiences living and working in a foreign culture. Each author describes the daily demands placed upon her through immersion into a different way of life and discusses the environmental challenges she had to overcome to be able to live and work successfully. Many of the cultural differences the authors faced forced them to reassess and reconstruct their most basic assumptions of both personal and professional life as they discovered that activities and theories common or applicable in one culture are not necessarily translatable into another. The authors also analyze culture across treatment areas in occupational therapy practice, including mental health and physical disability, with both adults and children. Both beginning and experienced occupational therapists and occupational therapy students will find much valuable information in Occupational Therapy Across Cultural Boundaries. Whether interested in examining occupational therapy’s application to non-Western cultures, or actually contemplating practicing in a different culture, readers will benefit from learning about the experiences of the authors. This unique book is also helpful for occupational therapy students wishing to examine the philosophy of occupational therapy or the significance of culture to human occupation. Professors will find it useful as an ancillary textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses in occupational therapy on topics such as theory, occupation across cultures, or meaningful activity. |
