microbiology lab practical exam: Microbiology Holly Ahern, 2018-05-22 As a group of organisms that are too small to see and best known for being agents of disease and death, microbes are not always appreciated for the numerous supportive and positive contributions they make to the living world. Designed to support a course in microbiology, Microbiology: A Laboratory Experience permits a glimpse into both the good and the bad in the microscopic world. The laboratory experiences are designed to engage and support student interest in microbiology as a topic, field of study, and career. This text provides a series of laboratory exercises compatible with a one-semester undergraduate microbiology or bacteriology course with a three- or four-hour lab period that meets once or twice a week. The design of the lab manual conforms to the American Society for Microbiology curriculum guidelines and takes a ground-up approach -- beginning with an introduction to biosafety and containment practices and how to work with biological hazards. From there the course moves to basic but essential microscopy skills, aseptic technique and culture methods, and builds to include more advanced lab techniques. The exercises incorporate a semester-long investigative laboratory project designed to promote the sense of discovery and encourage student engagement. The curriculum is rigorous but manageable for a single semester and incorporates best practices in biology education. |

microbiology lab practical exam: Experimental Design for Biologists David J. Glass, 2007 The effective design of scientific experiments is critical to success, yet graduate students receive very little formal training in how to do it. Based on a well-received course taught by the author, Experimental Design for Biologistsfills this gap. Experimental Design for Biologistsexplains how to establish the framework for an experimental project, how to set up a system, design experiments within that system, and how to determine and use the correct set of controls. Separate chapters are devoted to negative controls, positive controls, and other categories of controls that are perhaps less recognized, such as “assumption controls†and “experimentalist controls†. Furthermore, there are sections on establishing the experimental system, which include performing critical “system controls†. Should all experimental plans be hypothesis-driven? Is a question/answer approach more appropriate? What was the hypothesis behind the Human Genome Project? What color is the sky? How does one get to Carnegie Hall? The answers to these kinds of questions can be found in Experimental Design for Biologists. Written in an engaging manner, the book provides compelling lessons in framing an experimental question, establishing a validated system to answer the question, and deriving verifiable models from experimental data. Experimental Design for Biologistsis an essential source of theory and practical guidance in designing a research plan. |

microbiology lab practical exam: Pharmaceutical Microbiology Manual United States Food and Drug Administration, 2017-09-21 Manual and is a supplement to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) for pharmaceutical microbiology testing, including antimicrobial effectiveness testing, microbial examination of non-sterile products, sterility testing, bacterial endotoxin testing, particulate matter, device bioburden and environmental monitoring testing. The goal of this manual is to provide an ORA/CDER harmonized framework on the knowledge, methods and tools needed, and to apply the appropriate scientific standards required to assess the safety and efficacy of medical products within FDA testing laboratories. The PMM has expanded to include some rapid screening techniques along with a new section that covers inspectional guidance for microbiologists that conduct team inspections. This manual was developed by members of the Pharmaceutical Microbiology Workgroup and includes individuals with specialized experience and training. The instructions in this document are guidelines for FDA analysts. When available, analysts should use procedures and worksheets that are standardized and harmonized across all ORA field labs, along with the PMM, when performing analyses related to product testing of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. When changes or deviations are necessary, documentation should be completed per the laboratory's Quality Management System. Generally, these changes should originate from situations such as new products, unusual products, or unique situations. This manual was written to reduce compendia method ambiguity and increase standardization between FDA field laboratories. By providing clearer instructions to FDA ORA labs, greater transparency can be provided to both industry and the public. However, it should be emphasized that this manual is a supplement, and does not replace any information in USP or applicable FDA official guidance references. The PMM does not relieve any person or laboratory from the responsibility of ensuring that the methods being employed from the manual are fit for use, and that all testing is validated and/or verified by the user. The PMM will continually be revised as newer products, platforms and technologies emerge or any significant scientific gaps are identified with product testing. Reference to any commercial materials, equipment, or process in the PMM does not in any way constitute approval, endorsement, or recommendation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. |
microbiology lab practical exam: A Guide to Specimen Management in Clinical Microbiology Jon Michael Miller, 1999 This valuable and much needed reference/text provides details on proper communication between the lab and its clients, the rationale associated with the specimen requirements, and the correct procedures for specimen collection and management in the clinical microbiology laboratory. The first section looks at the premises on which quality microbiology diagnostic processes depend. It outlines the criteria that must be followed by the lab in the interest of good lab practice. The next section details the reasons why the lab must be involved in each part of the testing process, including the preanalytical, analytical and postanalytical steps. The rationale for stringent standards for specimen quality is also outlined. Section III gives instruction on how to select, collect, store and transport specimens for microbiological analysis. The last section contains excellent summary charts for quick reference for bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology specimens that can be used as a quick reference guide to answer most questions regarding the lab needs for a particular specimen. |

Cowie, 2013 The adoption of the practices and procedures in the manual will assist microbiology laboratories in acquiring the recognition of competence required for certification or accreditation and will also enhance the quality of the microbiological data generated by feed analysis laboratories. In addition, ensuring good laboratory practices presented in the document will enhance the health and safety of the laboratory workers, protect the environment from laboratory-discharged pollutants and increase the efficiency of laboratories. The document will also provide a strong base for microbiology laboratories on which they can develop a system which will meet the requirements of international standards. |
