john owen mortification of sin: Killing Sin Aaron M. Renn, John Owen, 2015-02-05 Killing Sin is John Owen's Puritan classic Mortification of Sin updated for today. Owen tackles the age-old challenge for the Christian: how to put to death the power of sin over our lives. This is something that is impossible through man-centered self-help or self-denial. But with God all things are possible. Though we will never be completely free of sin while alive in this world, by putting our faith on Christ with an expectation of His help, the Holy Spirit will bring the His cross into our hearts with all its sin-killing power. Owen tells us why it is imperative for the Christian to be killing sin in his life, what it actually means to kill sin, why only a Christian can do it, why it is only possible through the power of the Holy Spirit, and how we can avail ourselves of the power of the Spirit to kill sin through gospel faith in the death and resurrection of Christ. Owen's original Mortification of Sin was written in 17th century English that is extremely difficult to understand. This Killing Sin translates Owen into contemporary English that is easy to read without dumbing it down so people today can read this very important book on a most critical topic. |
john owen mortification of sin: Superheroes Can’t Save You Todd Miles, 2018-04-01 Comic superheroes embody the hopes of a world that is desperate for a savior. But those comic creations cannot save us from our greatest foes—sin and death. Throughout the history of the Church there have been bad ideas, misconceptions, and heretical presentations of Jesus. Each one of these heresies fails to present Jesus as the Bible reveals him. In Superheroes Can’t Save You, Todd Miles demonstrates how these ancient heresies are embodied in contemporary comic superheroes. Miles compares something everybody already knows (who the superheroes are) with what they need to know (who Jesus is), in a book that makes vitally important Christian truths understandable and applicable to a wide audience. |
john owen mortification of sin: Nature, Power, Deceit and Prevalency of Indwelling Sin in Believers ... John Owen, 1774 |
john owen mortification of sin: The Mortification of Sin John Owen, 2009-12-04 The Mortification of Sin by John Owen is a masterpiece on how to kill corruption in one's personal life. Less than 100 pages long, it is packed with insightful thinking regarding sanctification. Owen packs much into The Mortification of Sin, while still managing to leave many rocks just turned over so that the reader can search for himself. In The Mortification of Sin, Owen covers nine preliminary steps to overcoming. ( 1) Consider the dangerous symptoms of your lust; (2) Get a clear sense of the guilt and danger of the sin; (3) Load your conscience with the guilt of the perplexing distemper; (4) Have a vehement desire for deliverance; (5) Determine whether the sin is rooted in your natural temperament; (6) Prevent the opportunities for sin; (7) Vigorously oppose the first actings of sin; (8) Think deeply about the majesty of God; ( 9) Speak no peace to your own disquieted heart - let God speak it. These principles form the bulk of The Mortification of Sin, yet are fenced in by strong opposition to the legalistic methods of dealing with sin and with hearty exhortations to focus on Christ and be empowered by the Spirit in the whole task of mortifying sin. The Mortification of Sin is an excellent treatment of the subject and worthy of repeated readings. |

The doctrine has wide ramifications in our theologies as it makes it evident to us how sin works in our lives and whether it should have any kind of hold on us. |

john owen mortification of sin: Radical Depravity John Owen, J. C. Ryle, Arthur W. Pink , Thomas Reade, Joel Beeke , John Flavel, Charles H. Spurgeon, Felipe Chavarro Polanía, 2020-10-09 Jesus Christ saves radically depraved men, women, and children from their sins. However, to understand, believe, and love the good news about the crucified and resurrected Savior, we must first understand our condition. Thus, we offer this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster: Radical Depravity. Arthur Pink introduces us to this weighty subject by asking the question, “Is man a totally and thoroughly depraved creature by nature?” Thomas Reade then tells us about the deadly consequences and bitter fruits of Adam’s fall: in Adam all die. We then consider Joel Beeke’s helpful survey of the doctrine of human depravity. A second article by Thomas Reade leads us to a painful truth: the heart of man is evil. But he does not leave us there: he takes us to the blessed Son of God for deliverance. John Owen describes with great clarity the depraved and corrupted state of man’s mind and teaches us that the only remedy for this great darkness is the new birth: “You must be born again.” Loraine Boettner explains the extent and effects of original sin, which results in human inability in the matters of salvation. What is our true spiritual condition outside of Christ? Charles Spurgeon declares that we are legally, spiritually, and eternally dead. Nevertheless, he also tells us that we can be legally, spiritually, eternally alive by faith in Jesus Christ the Son! We then hear from John Flavel that in mercy, grace, and love, God draws sinners to Jesus Christ, gradually, suitably, powerfully, effectually, and finally. That is indeed good news! J. C. Ryle brings our subject to a close by asking a penetrating question: “Are you dead or alive?” Each of us, dear readers, must answer that question. |

This work goes over all the arguments that have been set up against the reality of Christ's death and Owen brilliantly rebukes these arguments and settles it all. |

john owen mortification of sin: Searching Our Hearts in Difficult Times John Owen, 2019-11-12 'O that we might advise one another as to what to do; to help one another to recover from our weaknesses!' Following Jesus is not easy. It involves self-denial, daily cross-bearing, and lifelong obedience. Salvation is promised to the one who 'endures to the end.' Christians need much encouragement, especially in 'difficult times'. This the Lord supplies through pastors who love him and care for his people. John Owen was such a pastor. One way he sought to help his fellow-believers was to hold occasional meetings for spiritual conference and fellowship at which various topics were addressed and discussed, with Owen providing a concluding summary of the proceedings. The short chapters in 'Searching Our Hearts in Difficult Times' contain a number of Owen's talks and sermons on a wide range of subjects which are as relevant to Christians today as they were to believers some three and a half centuries ago. Abridged and made easy to read. |
john owen mortification of sin: An Introduction to John Owen Crawford Gribben, 2020-06-11 Over 3 centuries since his passing, Puritan John Owen continues to impact readers through his writings. With over 8 million words published in 80 titles, his topics were as diverse as they were many, ranging from theological works to sociopolitical topics such as the proper nurture and education of children. An Introduction to John Owen by Crawford Gribben is a theological survey of these works, inviting readers to experience anew the grace of God as they go through the Christian life. For Owen, spiritual life was about increasing in grace and goodness, in fellowship with each member of the Trinity. This exploration captures the vision of the Christian life that Owen wished for his readers to have and distills it into an accessible companion volume. |

This work expounds the most glorious truth that believers may have distinct communion with the three persons Father, Son, and Spirit, and being addressed to the Christian reader is simpler than much of Owen's theology. (Unabridged. Includes all footnotes.) |

john owen mortification of sin: A Discourse Concerning the Holy Spirit John Owen, 1841 |
john owen mortification of sin: Temptation: Resisted and Repulsed John Owen, 2021-09-02 In this abridged and easy to read edition of John Owen's classic work, the famous Puritan theologian opens up Matthew 26:41, carefully explaining what temptation is and what is involved in entering into it. He then shows how Christ teaches two means for Christians to use to guard against this danger, namely watching and praying: 'These two', Owen says, 'comprise the whole endeavour of faith for the soul's preservation from tempation', and he insists that it is the duty of every believer to follow diligently Christ's instructions to avoid falling into temptation. Owen helpfully applies his teaching, showing us how we can know whether we have entered into temptation, what practical steps should be taken to preserve our souls from entering into it, how to identify those particular times when people tend to enter into it, and the best ways of watching the heart itself. Sinclair B. Ferguson has written: 'Many of Owen's readers have come away from reading him on such themes as temptation and indwelling sin feeling that Owen knew them through the through.' However, not only do Owen's penetrating insights open up areas of need in our own hearts, they also open up correspondingly profound assurances of grace in the Lord Jesus Christ. |
john owen mortification of sin: You're Only Human Kelly M. Kapic, 2022-01-18 Work. Family. Church. Exercise. Sleep. The list of demands on our time seems to be never ending. It can leave you feeling a little guilty--like you should always be doing one more thing. Rather than sharing better time-management tips to squeeze more hours out of the day, Kelly Kapic takes a different approach in You're Only Human. He offers a better way to make peace with the fact that God didn't create us to do it all. Kapic explores the theology behind seeing our human limitations as a gift rather than a deficiency. He lays out a path to holistic living with healthy self-understanding, life-giving relationships, and meaningful contributions to the world. He frees us from confusing our limitations with sin and instead invites us to rest in the joy and relief of knowing that God can use our limitations to foster freedom, joy, growth, and community. Readers will emerge better equipped to cultivate a life that fosters gratitude, rest, and faithful service to God. |

What we discover is that in Christ and through his church, God displays his deep love and provision for his people. |
john owen mortification of sin: Mortification of Sin in Believers John Owen, Classic Domain Publishing, 2014-06-12 1. Dealing with temptation helps us deal with evil before we fall into sin.2. The mortification of sin helps us avoid or get rid of sin so that it does not continue,3. Repentance helps us to get forgiveness after we sin as well as avoiding sin in the future. With God's help we need to get good at all three areas so that we overcome all sin – permanently. This work by John Owen is very helpful in the mortification (the killing) of sin. I use the word “killing of sin” because as John says: “Kill Sin Or Sin Will Kill You.” With humility and great care, read the following work by John Owen in order to finally kill all sin that has been defeating you in the past. Satan would have you believe that you cannot conquer sin, but Jesus says that you CAN conquer sin with His help and the help of His Holy Spirit. Don't despair. You CAN conquer sin – once and for all. Study it. Believe it. Pray For It. Do it. |

john owen mortification of sin: From Heaven He Came and Sought Her David Gibson, Jonathan Gibson, 2013-11-30 There is a palpable sense of confusion—and sometimes even embarrassment—with regard to so-called limited atonement today, pointing to the need for thoughtful engagement with this controversial doctrine. Offering scholarly insights for those seeking a thorough and well-researched discussion, this book will encourage charitable conversations as it winsomely defends this foundational tenet of Reformed theology. *The epub edition of this title will not display correctly when viewed on Adobe Digital Editions. john owen mortification of sin: Of the Mortification of Sin in Believers John Owen, 2015-12-16 John Owen (1616 - 24 August 1683) was an English Nonconformist church leader, theologian, and academic administrator at the University of Oxford. Owen was educated at Queen's College, Oxford, where he studied classics and theology and was ordained. Because of the high-church innovations introduced by Archbishop William Laud, Owen left the university to be a chaplain to the family of a noble lord. His first parish was at Fordham in Essex, to which he went while the nation was involved in civil war. Oliver Cromwell liked Owen and took him as his chaplain on his expeditions both to Ireland and Scotland from 1649-1651. As a result, Owen's fame was at its height from 1651 to 1660, during which he played a prominent part in the religious, political, and academic life of England. Shortly after the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, he moved to London, where he was active in preaching and writing until his death. He declined invitations to the ministry in Boston (1663) and the presidency of Harvard (1670) and chided New England Congregationalists for intolerance. |
