interactive general chemistry: The Basics of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry Bernd Michael Rode, Thomas S. Hofer, Michael D. Kugler, 2007-03-12 This textbook does away with the classic, unimaginative approach and comes straight to the point with a bare minimum of mathematics -- emphasizing the understanding of concepts rather than presenting endless strings of formulae. It nonetheless covers all important aspects of computational chemistry, such as - vector space theory - quantum mechanics - approximation methods - theoretical models - and computational methods. Throughout the chapters, mathematics are differentiated by necessity for understanding - fundamental formulae, and all the others. All formulae are explained step by step without omission, but the non-vital ones are marked and can be skipped by those who do not relish complex mathematics. The reader will find the text a lucid and innovative introduction to theoretical and computational chemistry, with food for thought given at the end of each chapter in the shape of several questions that help develop understanding of the concepts. What the reader will not find in this book are condescending sentences such as, 'From (formula A) and (formula M) it is obvious that (formula Z).'

interactive general chemistry: Chemistry & Chemical Reactivity John C. Kotz, Paul Treichel, Gabriela C. Weaver, 2006 Chapter Goals and Chapter Goals Revisited are two new features in this revision. Each chapter starts with a list of goals that allows students to see what is ahead. The chapter concludes with a repetition of that list with summary information added. General ChemistryNow is correlated to this list. New to this edition are dozens of Active Figures to help students visualize chemistry in action. These animated versions of text art help students master key concepts from the book. Active Figures can be used as demonstrations in the classroom and each figure is paired with a guided exploration and exercise to ensure students understand the concept being illustrated. In-text worked Examples follow a four-part structure: Problem statement, Strategy for approaching the problem, fully worked Solution, and, where appropriate, a Comment on the problem and solution. Through this approach, students learn how to approach a problem rather than merely learning to memorize problem types and memorized solution approaches. Exercises appear throughout the text so students can check their comprehension of the material. Answers are in an appendix. Problem-Solving Tips provide readers tips for determining how to approach and solve problems. Chemical Perspectives are essays that bring relevance and perspective to a study of chemistry. In order to put chemistry in its historical context, Historical Perspective essays describe the people who were key to developing the concepts of the chapter. A Closer Look essays describe ideas that form the background to material under discussion or provide another dimension of the subject. - Publisher.

interactive general chemistry: Pedagogic Roles of Animations and Simulations in Chemistry Courses Jerry P. Suits, Michael J. Sanger, 2014-03-27 Chemistry can be a very difficult topic for students to understand, in part because it requires students to think abstractly about the behaviors and interactions of atoms, molecules, and ions. Visualizations in chemistry can help to make chemistry at the particulate level less abstract because students can actually see these particles, and dynamic visualizations can help students understand how these particles interact and change over time as a reaction occurs. The chapters in this book are divided into four categories: Theoretical aspects of visualization design, design and evaluation of visualizations, visualizations studied by chemical education researchers, and visualizations designed for the chemistry classroom. Chapters 2-4 of this book focus on theoretical issues and concerns in developing and using animations and simulations to teach chemistry concepts. The theoretical frameworks described in these chapters not only include learning theories [such as Behaviorism, Cognitive Load Theory, and Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development], but also describe design principles that are informed by educational research on learning with multimedia. Both of these frameworks can be used to improve the way dynamic visualizations are designed, created, and utilized in the chemistry classroom. Chapters 5-8 of this book provide two examples of paired articles, in which the first chapter introduces and describes how the dynamic visuals were designed and created for use in chemistry instruction and the second chapter describes a chemical education research study performed to evaluate the effectiveness of using these dynamic visuals for chemistry instruction. Chapters 5 and 6 focus on interactive simulations created as part of the PhET Interactive Simulations Project. Chapters 7 and 8 focus on the virtual-world program Second Life and how it is being used to teach chemistry lessons. Chapters 9-14 of this book describe the results of chemical education research studies on the use of animations and simulations. Chapters 15-17 describe how specific dynamic visualization programs and modules were designed and how they should be utilized in the chemistry classroom to improve student learning.
