  incites essential science indicators: Mobility, Migration and the Chinese Scientific Research System Koen Jonkers, 2010-04-07 China’s rise is having a large impact on the global science system. The internalisation of this system in the past two decades would not have been possible without the outbound and especially the return flows of overseas Chinese scientists. This book explores their impact combining macro-level institutional and statistical analysis with an account of how the research culture has changed at the operational level. The theoretical framework used departs from the human capital approach, by building on literature from migration studies and evolutionary theories of the science system. It presents the results of an innovative mix of quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches. Overseas Chinese scientists and returnees are shown to have played an important role in shaping the internal development of the Chinese research system, as well as its relationship with research systems in Western Europe and North America. Now that the situation is improving, return has become an increasingly interesting option for expatriate researchers. This development may result in a virtuous cycle. Based on extensive and original empirical research Mobility, Migration and the Chinese Scientific Research System will be of interest to scholars and postgraduate students of research systems in general and the Chinese research and innovation system in particular.

El libro arranca con el análisis de los procesos de producción de la ciencia. Sigue una introducción a la terminología empleada en ciencia que, como se verá, es una de las herramientas más importantes para la gestión de la información científica. Se describen las principales fuentes de información en ciencias de la salud, comenzando por los orígenes de los diversos tipos de publicaciones científicas. Se pasa revista a las estrategias que permiten recuperar esta ingente cantidad de datos. También se dedica un capítulo especial al estudio de los indicadores de la investigación. Posteriormente se resumen los principales rasgos de la divulgación de la ciencia, tanto en los medios más tradicionales como en las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación. Finalizado este bloque temático, se analizan los rasgos principales de las profesiones sanitarias en un mundo caracterizado por una fuerte interacción entre ciencia, tecnología y medicina. Los últimos capítulos reconstruyen los principales procesos en la producción de saberes biosanitarios, particularmente en la creación de nuevos fármacos: la experimentación animal, los ensayos clínicos y la industria farmacéutica. El último capítulo ofrece una revisión de las principales cuestiones éticas relacionadas con las investigaciones biosanitarias. Todos los capítulos contienen ejemplos particulares que permiten clarificar los conceptos que se emplean. Muchos de los ejemplos se ofrecen en tablas y recuadros. Alguien tiene que aconsejarle la inscripción a una o a varias Sociedades Científicas y las ventajas que entraña; explicarle cómo trabajan las casas comerciales de productos de laboratorio, o cómo buscar y comparar éstos en la red; cómo optar a premios nacionales o internacionales. Alguien tiene que aconsejarle actividades no directamente relacionadas con su labor y que supondrán un plus en su currículum. Debería haber alguien que le indique precisamente la importancia de un buen CV a la hora de optar a una posición postdoctoral; en qué ocupa el tiempo su jefe, o por qué hay algunos tan “especiales”. O cuál es la diferencia entre un laboratorio grande y uno pequeño. O entre un centro de investigación con abolengo y uno recién construido. Por supuesto, alguien que le diga cuáles son las partes de una Tesis Doctoral, de qué manera lidiar con su jefe durante su escritura y cómo hay que aprovechar el tiempo durante los años de doctorado.
