depuy hip hemiarthroplasty technique guide: Handbook of Bioceramics and Biocomposites Iulian Vasile Antoniac, 2016-05-05 This handbook describes several current trends in the development of bioceramics and biocomposites for clinical use in the repair, remodelling, and regeneration of bone tissue. Comprehensive coverage of these materials allows fundamental aspects of the science and engineering to be seen in close relation to the clinical performance of dental and orthopaedic implants. Bioceramics and biocomposites appear to be the most dynamic area of materials development for both tissue engineering and implantable medical devices. Almost all medical specialties will continue to benefit from these developments, but especially dentistry and orthopaedics. In this Handbook, leading researchers describe the use of bionanomaterials to create new functionalities when interfaced with biological molecules or structures. Also described are technologies for bioceramics and biocomposites processing in order to fabricate medical devices for clinical use. Another important section of the book is dedicated to tissue regeneration with development of new matrices. A targeted or personalized treatment device reduces drug consumption and treatment expenses, resulting in benefits to the patient and cost reductions for public health systems. This authoritative reference on the state-of-the-art in the development and use of bioceramics and biocomposites can also serve as the basis of instructional course lectures for audiences ranging from advanced undergraduate students to post-graduates in materials science and engineering and biomedical engineering.

depuy hip hemiarthroplasty technique guide: Low Friction Arthroplasty of the Hip J. Charnley, 2012-12-06 The theme of this work is the application of the engmeermg theory of frictional torque to total hip replacement. The author adhered tenaciously to this theory, involving the use of a small-diameter femoral head, throughout the epoch when the large-diame ter, metal-to-metal design dominated the field. During that considerable period general satisfaction with the early results rendered criticisms of the large-diameter head unwelcome. There was a formidable array of counter criticism: the small head would pierce a film of synovial fluid; the small head would wear the socket too rapidly; the small head would always have a high risk of dislocation; detachment of the trochanter, to achieve precise orientation for the small head, was unacceptable. But all these objections have now been largely overcome. Lubrication of high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWP) on metal is now accepted as being mainly by the boundary regime with thick fluid films playing no part. We now know that HMWP can indeed tolerate the very high stresses imposed by the small head and in tribological theory there may even be some advantage in high stress. Dislocation is now known not to be an automatic sequel to the small head.

depuy hip hemiarthroplasty technique guide: Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis Pol Maria Rommens, Alexander Hofmann, 2017-12-19 Thanks to an increasing life expectancy of our populations the number of elderly persons is steadily growing and will continue to do so. Among these, the rate of persons with illnesses and degenerative diseases is significant. The prevalence of osteoporosis is especially high in elderly women and leads to typical fracture patterns. Hip fractures, proximal humerus fractures, distal radius fractures and fractures of the vertebral column are the most common. In the last decade, we are confronted with a sharp increase of fragility fractures of the pelvis. Until now, there is no consensus on how to identify and classify these lesions and there are no guidelines for treatment and after treatment. In particular, there is no common view on which patients need an operative treatment and which technique of osteosynthesis should be used. This book fills the gap in available literature and gives a state of the art guide to the treatment of fragility fractures of the pelvis. With the sharp increase of these fractures and the lacking consensus, Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis will become indispensable for the physicians who take care of elderly patients with this pathology. Written by a team of expert opinion leaders, the aim of this book is to contribute to the scientific discussion in this area and to help provide the optimal care for these patients.

depuy hip hemiarthroplasty technique guide: Shoulder Arthroplasty Gilles Walch, Pascal Boileau, 2012-12-06 Success in shoulder arthroplastic surgery is not necessarily dependent only on the principle of construction of a prosthetic device, nor on the way this device is implanted or fixed to the bony interface, but more so on the understanding and handling of the soft tissues surrounding the articulation. Based on their experience in basic anatomy and function, the editors of this book were able to develop a prosthetic device which can take into account individual anatomical variations in each patient, making a successful outcome of surgery much more predictable. This must-have for any shoulder surgeon not only informs on the current state-of-the-art, but also provides an understanding of what advances can be achieved with innovative thinking in the field of orthopaedic surgery.

Within this book, the chapters focus on a particular subject area focusing on how to successfully perform a procedure in a step-by-step manner in a variety of scenarios from condylar revisions to salvage cases. Topics covered include how to use surgical techniques in instances of periprosthetic distal femur fractures and manage infections where bone loss has been significant. Long-term outcome data is also presented to enable the reader to develop a deep understanding of where a particular strategy might be most effective. Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Practical Guide concisely details how to use the techniques covered in all aspects of revision knee surgery, making it an indispensable resource for all those involved in the care of these patients or who use these techniques in their day-to-day clinical practice.

Since the publication of the 1st edition there have been major advances in the development and clinical adoption of highly crosslinked UHMWPE for hip and knee replacement. There has also been a major international effort to introduce Vitamin E stabilized UHMWPE for patients. The accumulated knowledge on these two classes of materials are a key feature of the 2nd edition, along with an additional 19 additional chapters providing coverage of the key engineering aspects (biomechanical and materials science) and clinical/biological performance of UHMWPE, providing a more complete reference for industrial and academic materials specialists, and for surgeons and clinicians who require an understanding of the biomaterials properties of UHMWPE to work successfully on patient applications. * The UHMWPE Handbook is the comprehensive reference for professionals, researchers, and clinicians working with biomaterials technologies for joint replacement * New to this edition: 19 new chapters keep readers up to date with this fast moving topic, including a new section on UHMWPE biomaterials; highly crosslinked UHMWPE for hip and knee replacement; Vitamin E stabilized UHMWPE for patients; clinical performance, tribology an biologic interaction of UHMWPE * State-of-the-art coverage of UHMWPE technology, orthopedic applications, biomaterial characterisation and engineering aspects from recognised leaders in the field
