21st century cultural works that impacted society: 12 Ballads for Huguenot House Theaster Gates, Michael Darling, Matthew Jesse Jackson, John Preus, 2012 In his 12 Ballads for Huguenot House, Theaster Gates chronicles his ambitious project to unite two disused buildings – one in Chicago and the other in Kassel, Germany – by dismantling parts of each to reuse in the rebuilding of the other.The forgotten and dilapidated Huguenot House, built during the early nineteenth century in Kassel, attracted the attention of Gates, as he would associate the histories of the migrant workers who built it so many years ago with that of black and Hispanic builders in his own neighbourhood in Chicago today. Meanwhile, across the ocean, Gates eyed a large, decaying building in Chicago, whose architectural details have remained intact.Gates envisioned an exchange and ultimately proposed to bring materials from the Chicago building to renovate the Huguenot House. The process will also be reversed: materials from the Huguenot House will later be reused to reconstruct the building in Chicago. In the pages of this book, Gates documents his plans for the exchange, and all of its elaborate and complex sociopolitical and historical detail, in twelve thematic 'ballads'. 21st century cultural works that impacted society: Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture Henry Jenkins, 2009-06-05 Many teens today who use the Internet are actively involved in participatory cultures—joining online communities (Facebook, message boards, game clans), producing creative work in new forms (digital sampling, modding, fan videomaking, fan fiction), working in teams to complete tasks and develop new knowledge (as in Wikipedia), and shaping the flow of media (as in blogging or podcasting). A growing body of scholarship suggests potential benefits of these activities, including opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, development of skills useful in the modern workplace, and a more empowered conception of citizenship. As one of the most significant twentieth-century thinkers about technology, Ellul was among the first thinkers to realize the importance of topics such as globalization, terrorism, communication technologies and ecology, and study them from a technological perspective. The book is divided into three sections. The first discusses Ellul’s diagnosis of modern society, and addresses the reception of his work on the technological society, the notion of efficiency, the process of symbolization/de-symbolization, and ecology. The second analyzes communicational and cultural problems, as well as threats and trends in early twenty-first century societies. Jameson, Sergiu Musteaţă, 2019-06-14 Recent years have witnessed a rapid increase in the fields of cultural heritage studies and community archaeology worldwide with expanding discussions about the mechanisms and consequences of community participation. This trend has brought to the forefront debates about who owns the past, who has knowledge, and how heritage values can be shared more effectively with communities who then ascribe meaning and value to heritage materials. Globalization forces have created a need for contextualizing knowledge to address complex issues and collaboration across and beyond academic disciplines, using more integrated methodologies that include the participation of non-academics and increased stakeholder involvement. Successful programs provide power sharing mechanisms and motivation that effect more active involvement by lay persons in archaeological fieldwork as well as interpretation and information dissemination processes. With the contents of this volume, we envision community archaeology to go beyond descriptions of outreach and public engagement to more critical and reflexive actions and thinking. The volume is presented in the context of the evolution of cultural heritage studies from the 20th century “expert approach” to the 21st century “people-centered approach,” with public participation and community involvement at all phases of the decision-making process.
